Mannar, Putlam, Kalpitiya & Beyond
The North-West feels like a side of Sri Lanka few get to see, a land of wide-open spaces, salt flats, lagoons and windswept beaches. Mannar is a haven for migratory birds, including flamingos, and wandering among baobab trees, long causeways, and roaming donkeys feels almost otherworldly.
Kalpitiya brings a different energy as Sri Lanka’s kite-surfing capital. Turquoise waters and mangrove channels draw adventure seekers, while dolphins often play just offshore. Puttalam thrives along its lagoon, with salt fields, vibrant fishing communities, and coastal dishes like dried fish, lagoon crab, spicy pickles, and tamarind-infused curries giving a true taste of the region.
Southeast, Wilpattu National Park stretches across wetlands, dry forests, and plains, sheltering leopards, spotted deer, and sloth bears.
